A couple weeks ago was our one year anniversary! It still blows my mind that it's already been a year of marriage, but at the same time it's hard to remember what life was like before we were married. Conveniently we had already planned on getting away that weekend for a friends wedding reception, so it was easy to figure out a way to celebrate making it past year one.
The reception was in Sacramento California so we were ready for a road trip. Of course I don't do well in cars right now and couldn't make it the whole way so we left in the afternoon on Thursday and stopped in Reno for the night. I won't lie, the drive to Reno wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, which made me real excited!
I was really tired that night so we stopped and ate dinner and then went back to the hotel and watched the Olympics until I fell asleep....because that's just how life is right now :) We took our time getting up and getting ready the next day, and then headed to Sacramento. We had a few hours to kill before we could check into our next hotel so we went to the zoo! I've always had a thing for zoos, I just can't help it.
Of course it was blazing hot, so most of the animals were hiding in the shade of the trees or were even inside. We saw quite a few signs that said these animals don't like heat so if you can't see them they are inside. I couldn't blame them, I was hot too and wouldn't want to sit outside all day.
I was pretty disappointed that the Otters weren't out :( They are truly my favorite to sit and watch so I may have thrown a mini tantrum when there was a sign saying they weren't out that day, but I'm sure I'll get over it one day. Plenty of other zoo trips out there to see the otters!
We got checked into our hotel and got ready to meet our friends for dinner. It was really nice to hang out with them for the night and forget about life back in Utah for just a minute. We decided to take a dip in the pool, and then go out for ice cream! After a month of no sugar I definitely splurged this weekend and ate more than I really should have. NO REGRETS! it was delicious.
Saturday morning was another lazy morning, i'm really getting used to them these days :) Once we finally convinced ourselves (and by ourselves I mean me, Curtis was ready to go) we got ready and met up with our friends for some pizza. When in doubt, choose pizza, it's a simple life motto that Curtis and I seem to live by. After that It was time for the newlyweds to set up for their reception so Curtis and I went to Old Town Sacramento for the afternoon.
Our first stop was a candy shop, but be proud because I only got sugar free stuff! Curtis got a good bag full of taffy and then we were off to explore. There were a lot more places than I remember there being there and it was fun to walk around and window shop a bit. Of course the place we stayed at the longest was the sock shop.....Curtis just loves his socks!
I knew that I wanted to get old fashioned pictures taken, and when we walked by one of the places we say that they did marriage certificates. How perfect considering we were celebrating one year of marriage. Shot gun wedding shot seemed too perfect.
We found an "antique" shop. Once we went in we found out that it really just sold a TON of records, and arcade games, and old stereo systems. Not what we were expecting but it was fun to walk around and listen to the music that was playing.
A few more stops and it was time to head home to get ready for the reception. Again, I had more sugar than I should have, but I didn't give into the cupcakes so really it was a success. Once the reception was over we headed back to the hotel and went down for another swim. There's something about sitting in the water when you're pregnant, it's the one time you can't feel your tummy stretching and you can move around freely. I need to invest in a pool.
The next day we woke up and went to church and then went back to the hotel for a quick nap. We were more tired than we thought because our quick nap turned into a couple hours of being completely out. I woke up and looked at the clock and realized we had to check out in a few minutes. We packed up quicker than I thought was possible for us and headed over to our friends house to have lunch with them one more time before heading off.
That night we wanted to stay somewhere a little more special since the next day was our actual anniversary. We booked a hotel on the beaches of Lake Tahoe with a room facing the water. It was beautiful there! I didn't know i would fall in love with it as much as I did.
It was hard to find a place for dinner because there were so many cute options that we wanted to try, but this was our only night there. We finally just picked one and I won't lie I'm a little sad that we picked the one we did. The food was pretty good and the atmosphere was fun but the service was awful. I don't know what it was about our table, but our waiter seemed to forget about us a lot. If it was really busy I would understand more, but it wasn't. He had to tables (both just with two people) and two people at the bar. I got pretty annoyed by the end because we had things to do, poor Curtis handled my complaining really well.
After we ate we went to the hotel and put our swimsuits on. I was determined to try to get in the water even though it was cold but then I just got my feet wet and gave up and sat in the sand. Curtis was brave and got in though :) I'm a wimp sometimes and that's ok, I was perfectly content sitting in the sand watching the lake.
We took a walk along the pier and it was gorgeous! We saw that our hotel actually has a restaurant on the pier, which I totally knew. It was actually one of the reasons that I chose that specific hotel, because I wanted to have dinner on the pier. But I forgot....pregnancy brain? So next time, someone please remind me to go there. We sat on the pier for a while and talked about our future vacations with lil babes, it's the little things in life that make me smile.
I wanted to get in some water so we went to the pool, at first it wasn't bad but then it was FREEZING! It was an outdoor pool and the sun was going down and the wind started blowing. Curtis looked like he was going to freeze to death. After a couple minutes we got off and quickly dried off and ran back to our warm hotel room. And when I say we dried off quickly I mean, Curtis did and then proceeded to say, "Jade I'm going to leave you if you don't hurry up" as he started walking to the gate. Obviously he was a little chilly :)
We showered and went back to the beach. Our hotel had hammocks facing the water, and this was honestly one of the highlights of the trip for me. We watched the sunset while laying in a hammock, and I felt so much peace and relaxation. I never wanted to come home! Once the sun was down we walked across the street to the grocery store to buy some hot chocolate and snacks for the ride back. When we got backt o the hotel we drank hot chocolate and watched more Olympics until again, I fell asleep. It was perfect.
The next morning I woke up starving, and the only thing that sounded good was blueberry pancakes. I woke Curtis up a few times asking him if it was time for breakfast yet, and then it finally was! I was so excited :) We went to a cute little restaurant in our hotel that had the BEST service. Really made up for the place we were at the night before. They didn't have blueberry pancakes on their menu, but Curtis was sweet enough to ask if it was something they could make for me. They were literally the best! and the server brought out a small bowl of blueberries on the side, while making some pregnancy joke about how he wasn't going to stand in the way of me and my need for blueberries. He was the nicest guy.
Then it was the sad time of packing up and heading back. We didn't feel like coming back at all by that point, but you gotta do what you gotta do. The drive wasn't terrible and we made it back at a decent time.
All in all I thought the weekend was perfect. I was exhausted by the end, but at the same time so so HAPPY! so here's to one year of marriage down, and an eternity to go! I don't know what I would do without Curtis in my life, and I'm so glad that he will be there with me forever. We really do live a good life, and I can't wait for our little girl to be here so that we can grow our little family, and take her on our adventures with us :)
Happy One Year Anniversary Babe! |
